It may seem like everyone is spending a daily meal swipe at the Chick-Fil-A, but more students than ever before are following plant-based diets. Plant-based doesn’t necessarily mean that someone is vegan or vegetarian, but that plants are the focal part of their diet. According to a survey by College Pulse, 14% of college students are plant-based. This is almost four times the percentage of plant-based adults.
There are a select few things in life that just hit different: the sound of rain whilst vibing, flipping to the soft side of a pillow and that first sip of matcha tea. The drink is a Japanese green tea variant that takes young tea leaves and grinds them into a fine powder. When prepared in drink form, it has a smooth vegetal yet sweet taste with faint chalky undertones. The unfathomable wonder that is matcha tea ascends the planes of comfort and finds itself seated at the zen throne.

Believe it or not, Valentine’s Day isn’t the only made-up holiday we can celebrate in February. Valentine's Day endorses buying cards, candy and overpriced flowers for your sweetheart, but what about those of us that don't have one? It's unfair to expect us to miss out on the fun. Since we are celebrating our significant other, we might as well celebrate our significant others too. Galentine’s Day started out as just an episode of "Parks and Recreation", but has become a movement for "lady friends" everywhere. It takes the pressure away from those of us that aren't in a relationship, but still allows us to celebrate the lovey-dovey month of February. Dread it. Run from it. Valentine’s Day still arrives. It seems to be a fact that the more celebrated a holiday is, the more miserable we as a people can get. Which I totally get, and to some level have even accepted, but I am not the majority. This list is dedicated to those who fail to internalize the utter dread of being single on Valentine’s day and subsequently come up with reasons why they’re “okay” with their relationship status on the one day it seems to matter. This list is the comfort, the intervention and the all-around kick in the butt to get back in the arena this year. Interested yet? Let’s proceed.

We're well on our way to celebrating our one year anniversary with the pandemic and we can’t help but sigh that being cooped up wearing our pajamas and sweats day in and day out has made us forget about the rush of playing spring dress-up.
A passion for cuisine and a vision for a franchise is often the goal for restaurateurs. Any restaurateur can dream of the day when their ideas manifest, but only a few are lucky enough to see their dreams manifest physically. For the past two years, Slice of Columbia has exceeded expectations and maintained its success and consistency from the food it serves and the community it impacts. Located in Columbia, SC, Slice of Columbia is a Black-owned, family-run business that has remained a fan favorite in the metro area when it comes to traditional-style pizza. Garnet & Black sat down with the owner, Earl Cooper, to discuss what it’s like being a local business in Columbia while navigating the harsh waters of a global pandemic.
Online learning has changed our approach to education this semester. Lectures have been broadcasted, tests are being taken online, homework is never turned in on paper. So with the change in all of our coursework, why wouldn’t we change the way we prepare for our courses? It can be daunting to think of studying in your dorm room all day by yourself and Thomas Cooper Library has become a place where masks are mandatory. Coffee shops are a study option where you can enjoy a tasty drink and different atmosphere. The past two weeks, I have been doing my homework at local coffee shops and composed a list of different places to try if you ever need a break from your room.
The first time I visited A Peace of Soul Vegan Kitchen was this past June. Someone recommended the restaurant on Twitter in a thread of Black-owned businesses in Columbia, and I figured a Black-owned vegan spot was worth a try (even though I’m not a practicing vegan). As soon as I stepped foot inside the restaurant, I immediately knew I had made the right decision.

Like most of you, my acne first appeared when I was in middle school. However, mine was so bad I had to go to the dermatologist because over-the-counter products were ineffective. My dermatologist prescribed me Retin-A, a product targeting acne. After a few months, my skin was manageable and my acne became mild. However, college changed everything. Between eating too much Chick-fil-A (thanks, Russell House), becoming less active (walking up the Bull Street hill was not enough exercise), and dealing with new stressors, my skin regressed to how it was all those years ago. I was devastated because I naively thought that chapter in my life would be closed forever. As if things couldn't get any worse, my skin also stopped reacting to the Retin-A and other treatments my dermatologist prescribed.
Companies like Yelp and Trip Advisor give you the best of the best. Maybe it’s an unpopular opinion, but some of us don’t want to know the best places in a city, we want a more authentic experience. There are so many places that the internet won’t tell you about because only locals know about them. I’ve come to learn that especially in this city, University of South Carolina students and residents of Columbia definitely have better insight and advice than the internet.

Charcuterie itself refers to cold, cured meats. A charcuterie board, however, typically contains the meat along with cheese, bread and condiments.
