Emerging from the Façade

(10/24/23 10:29pm)

Society influences people to live their lives a certain way, pressuring them to fill a mold that is uncomfortable to most, but convenient for some. The rise of social media trends plays a role in the increase of pressure felt by those who express themselves in “out-of-the-box” ways. The harsh reality is that expressing yourself in inventive ways is complex and dangerous for some. More and more people feel tied down by societal constraints, leading them to put on a façade that does not represent their identity. The visuals represent the suffocation felt by so many as a result. The plastic and fabric represent restriction, preventing people from living authentically. Thus, this story challenges those to reject social convention and emerge from the charade that was forced upon them. Express yourself at your own convenience.

People connect with others in many ways, but one important way humans have always found that connection is through art. No matter how advanced technology becomes, art remains and will always remain, a unifying force in our world.

At Its Core

(10/24/23 10:22pm)

The concept of fashion "cores" has skyrocketed in popularity with the growing prominence of social media. It's not uncommon to see Pinterest boards curated to encapsulate a specific aesthetic — perhaps you've even made one yourself. The desire to fit a certain core has its appeal, whether people just want to give off a certain vibe or even find online communities of others who share their same interests. Regardless of one's purpose for pursuing a core, we are all looking to achieve a common goal: to find our personal sense of style. Some of the most popular cores are simply fashion styles that follow the same set of general aesthetic rules, but other cores are extensions of larger online communities that work to embody an entire lifestyle.

Eye Spy

(03/18/24 3:19pm)

We, as humans, are in constant transition. Personal belongings can serve as a map of that growth. We all have something from our childhoods that we just can’t get rid of, no matter how functional it actually is. Perhaps it is a shirt that you have long since grown out of, or a favorite stuffed animal gifted to you by a relative.

Death of the Influencer

(04/24/23 12:00pm)

So much of our generation grew up with dreams of becoming the next David Dobrik or Jaclyn Hill, of being sponsored by FashionNova or Morphe. But at the dawn of 2023, we’re left to wonder: is influencing a dying industry? Are the days of exaggerated storytimes and extravagant GRWMs coming to an end?  We’ve seen so many of our favorite creators release videos titled, "Why I’m quitting Youtube,” either moving to the greener pastures of TikTok and podcasts or abandoning the limelight altogether. Even the OG TikTokers are more interested in making movies or releasing music than lip-syncing or participating in the latest dance trend. Despite all of this, influencing is still one of the most sought-after careers for young people. So, what isn't the public seeing? What is driving creators away from the platforms that brought them such success?

In Retrospect

(03/28/23 10:32pm)

It's almost impossible to keep up with the ever-changing trends that occur (or reoccur) in pop culture and fashion. Technology continues to advance as fashion trends are commonly repeated, referenced and renovated into new designs for higher efficiency and style. In this style shoot, details from the Victorian and Renaissance eras were juxtaposed with early 2000s technology to show that styles and trends are always referenced, even in modern-day looks. As new styles continue to emerge, we may look back and realize there is more to learn from our past than we thought. In retrospect, we can note our flaws and apply the wisdom we gain to new ideas.

Counterculture is Here to Stay

(01/31/24 4:48pm)

Bell bottoms, shag haircuts, and statement sunglasses. They’re all trends from the 1970s that have resurfaced in the last couple of years. Or maybe, you think of motorcycle jackets, tartan, and Doc Martens. Though the two seem unlinked, both were styles associated with political and social oppositions, often known as counterculture.

Rewriting The Story of Medusa

(04/19/23 12:00pm)

Versace, founded by Gianni Versace in 1978, is an Italian luxury brand that holds a reputation as one of the top design houses internationally. Versace was inspired by Greek culture and mythology, hence Versace’s Medusa logo and use of Greek accents. He also created his brand on a foundation of feminism. Donatella Versace, Versace’s current artistic director, has strengthened this foundation. In an interview with Donatella per Grazia Magazine, a women’s magazine in Italy, Ms. Versace discusses her motivations when designing her collections. “Women live complex lives; we’re complex people, with many different sides to what we do every single day. When I'm designing my collections, I’m always thinking about the woman today and the intricacies in her life.” Recognizing the power of women today, Ms. Versace said, “[this is] the power I want to express in my shows.” Ms. Versace sees fashion as a way for women to embrace their beauty and power.

Ballet to Runway

(02/23/23 1:00pm)

Ballet is breathtaking, but its history of racism, sexual abuse and body shaming casts a shadow on its poise and grace. With the resurgence of the "balletcore" aesthetic, led by designers like Simone Rocha and MM6 Maison Margiela, "Ballet to Runway" presents a progressive take on the traditional art form. Through dynamic poses, this shoot aims to highlight the intricate beauty of ballet-inspired fashion across a diverse array of models. It also adds an avant-garde twist to impressions from the ballet classroom and famous ballet performances. The shoot even features original garments made by the stylist, who is a fiber artist.
