Rewriting The Story of Medusa

(04/19/23 12:00pm)

Versace, founded by Gianni Versace in 1978, is an Italian luxury brand that holds a reputation as one of the top design houses internationally. Versace was inspired by Greek culture and mythology, hence Versace’s Medusa logo and use of Greek accents. He also created his brand on a foundation of feminism. Donatella Versace, Versace’s current artistic director, has strengthened this foundation. In an interview with Donatella per Grazia Magazine, a women’s magazine in Italy, Ms. Versace discusses her motivations when designing her collections. “Women live complex lives; we’re complex people, with many different sides to what we do every single day. When I'm designing my collections, I’m always thinking about the woman today and the intricacies in her life.” Recognizing the power of women today, Ms. Versace said, “[this is] the power I want to express in my shows.” Ms. Versace sees fashion as a way for women to embrace their beauty and power.

Ballet to Runway

(02/23/23 1:00pm)

Ballet is breathtaking, but its history of racism, sexual abuse and body shaming casts a shadow on its poise and grace. With the resurgence of the "balletcore" aesthetic, led by designers like Simone Rocha and MM6 Maison Margiela, "Ballet to Runway" presents a progressive take on the traditional art form. Through dynamic poses, this shoot aims to highlight the intricate beauty of ballet-inspired fashion across a diverse array of models. It also adds an avant-garde twist to impressions from the ballet classroom and famous ballet performances. The shoot even features original garments made by the stylist, who is a fiber artist.

Fearless Fashion

(04/14/23 12:00pm)

Styled by Angel Sortijas Model: Aliyah Grady Fashion is art and art is fun, creative, imaginative and beautiful. Life can only be those things if you chose it to be. It is easy to get lost in the beauty of fashion in terms of how far you can take it, how simple or extraordinary you can make it with no problem at all. Every piece is a little bit more exciting to put together, it can get frustrating but nowhere near as life can get. It is easier to start over when you mess something up, you can dream big and plan ahead of time because you know that if you stuck to the blueprint, then it will turn out exactly how you envisioned it to be. There might be some slight changes, but you know exactly that it’s for the best. You believe it to be true because you have concrete proof, you can witness it getting better right before your eyes. You are in complete awe of how coherently it’s all coming together. It’s so much easier and so much more fun to dream of something when you know that it will only get better. You get to have exactly what you want in every detail no matter how big or small the art may be.

A Wave of Mythological Retellings

(10/14/24 3:49pm)

Should Medusa have been feared for her cursed eyes? Or should she have been pitied for being assaulted and cursed through no fault of her own?
