THE LEGENDARY ULTIMATE CHALLENGE MUD RUN Saturday 12th April
Finals are finally over and summer’s within reach, but there’s still one more hurdle to jump over: moving out. Somehow over the past year your belongings have expanded three times in size. What seems to be a daunting task is actually lot easier than you think. Just know what to take, what to stash and what to trash.
To Infinity and Beyond!
What started out, as an idea between two best friends has now become a name known locally to their hometown in New York and here at USC. Domenick Pfau and Matt Peterson of Bolton Landing, NY began their business the summer after freshmen year. While Pfau was in New York and Peterson here in Columbia, both collaborated back and forth via Facebook to create what is now Tank Top Tuesdays.
ULTIMATE SPRING BREAK Dreaming of shutting your laptop for the first time, zipping up your book-bag and capping all those pens… we all are in need of some sort of getaway. Finding a place to retreat to may require a little effort; however, it’s nothing compared to the struggle of finals. Whether your definition of a vacation is volunteering towards a greater cause or surfing something other than the web, it’s time to pack a bag and step off campus. Your arguments with your TA over mid-term grades should not be your only adventure this semester.
Shawn Beach started at USC as a business student, but found his passion through his current retail major. A third year student from Columbia, Shawn became interested in starting his own business during his freshman year. “I started feeling just bad about where my life was going… like I was just going through the motions. Winter break came around and I woke up one morning with a sick idea and kind of molded it all together over the next few months.” Shawn’s idea was to create his own online thrift store, Dope Junkyard. The Junkyard sells “unique and very limited thrift items and brand new items from designers” that are priced anywhere between $5 and $85, depending on the item.
When the sky turns that specific shade of milky winter gray, the sun sets at 5pm and a deep chill creeps in, even in South Carolina, hibernation begins to look like a great alternative to suffering through the cold months. Naturally with inclimate weather, people spend less time outdoors, become less active and prefer a night at home with Netflix to a night out on the town. But, for some people, these reclusive tendencies may be more than just the winter blues.
The quarter-life crisis is becoming almost too common among college students and those in their early twenties. There seems to be more pressure these days to find a great, well-paying and fulfilling path in life despite the current economy and stress our parents and peers put on us. I know I occasionally have mini-panic attacks when I’m about to fall asleep because of questions like these: What am I doing? How can I actually make the most out of my time in college and beyond? What if I don’t get offered any kind of job when graduation rolls around and I can’t even afford my own apartment? What if I end up in the same town for the rest of my life?
As a student at the University of South Carolina, Five Points is a popular place to seek out the nightlife. The bars are college-priced, the scene is college-aged and the music is typically to our liking. However, there are several reasons one might want to go elsewhere. Five Points, as we all know, has its fair share of risks when it comes to a night on the town. It can also get very crowded on the weekends, and you might end up waiting for an hour to get into a bar. Or maybe you are just tired of the same old thing and want to try something new. Some might feel that Five Points is their only option for a good time Columbia actually offers a very strong nightlife for almost any kind of mood you’re in. Here are some of my favorite spots in addition to bars and restaurants I’ve been meaning to try out. Each place has something unique to offer, depending on what you’re feeling.
From the advent of the camera and since the first photo was captured in 1826 in a backyard in France, people have been fascinated by photography. We take photos for many reasons. We want to preserve a moment, our own moment. We want to show a glimpse, if ever so slight, of the way in which we see the world. We want to allow others to peer through our lens. We want to see something the naked eye cannot. We want to stop time and to allow our eyes the indulgence of exploring further into what we see. Now not only do we see the tree, but we can see the branches and the leaves. We take a picture because we need to say that I was there, that I existed.
I’m not talking about your relationship with the bowl of Cheetos on your lap as you watch America’s Next Top Model or your relationship with your neighbor’s cocker spaniel. This isn’t a self–help guide on how to get the best and sexiest relationship possible in five easy steps. Truly, there is no easy way of having fulfilling and carefree relationships. The complicated and vast universe we inhabit won’t allow for that to happen. But don’t fret; we’ve assembled some things that are necessary to maintain a healthy and happy relationship with your friends, family, significant others and, most importantly, yourself.
We’ve all seen the typical YouTube videos of tricks people can do on a skateboard, but how many mind-blowing performances have you witnessed on a razor scooter? Brandon Knapp, a freshman at the University of South Carolina just so happens to have that hidden talent, as many of his videos prove.
1. Sixteen Candles The ultimate birthday dilemma – your family forgets your birthday. For a 16-year-old girl this might be the worst thing that could happen, but when your high school crush has an equally popular and beautiful girlfriend, you’ve got yourself a full-fledged teenage tragedy! Andy, the middle child, struggles with an identity crisis as she tries to find her place in both her family and at school. With the help of a crazy foreign exchange student named Long Duk Dong and the nerdy, self-proclaimed “King of The Dipshits”, this movie is the ultimate coming-of-age comedy.
Her fingertips caress the strings, obediently shifting to hit the notes. The music swells to fill the room, and in a moment the world disappears; only a girl, her cello, and pure harmony remain. I may be a cellist of twelve years, but compared to myself, sophomore Anna Mathias is Yo-Yo Ma. “I’ve been playing cello since I was six,” she states. “So, fourteen years.” Her tone reflects a no-big-deal kind of attitude, but in truth, her musical upbringing could rival Beethoven’s. “My whole family majored in music and does music. It’s like our thing.”
1993- You may have heard this story of a wife who chopped off her husband’s most cherished parts in a fit of rage. One summer night, Lorena Bobbitt got up for a drink of water and instead of going back to sleep, she brought a knife with her to the bedroom. As her husband slept, Lorena cut off his “babymaker” then took a drive to an open field where she threw it out of the window. After a long and tedious search, it was found and reattached to its owner.
Does the thought of going to a crowded mall on a Saturday afternoon give you endless amounts of worries? For some, mall shopping might be an ideal way of buying clothes and accessories, but college students may find it hard to take time out of their busy schedules to drive all the way to a mall and shop. Online shopping provides a plethora of clothing items, shoes, accessories and anything you could possibly imagine…all at your fingertips. Retailers have observed the increase in online shoppers, causing more online sales, free shipping and specials that ensure a quick and easy shopping experiences! These are some of the online websites I use everyday (yes, I might be a little addicted) to buy clothes!
About 22 percent of people are currently on a diet. This number fluctuates as weight loss trends come and go. It is awful to think that things other than factual information influence the health industry. Those raspberry ketone pills? LOL. They will do about the same good for your health as those two pop-tarts you scarfed down at breakfast. But this is exactly the problem. We obsess for so long over the instant solutions for weight-loss because we are all too lazy to lift our asses up off the couch and run around the block. Harsh, but true.
If you haven’t devoted at least one hour of your life to watching Grey’s Anatomy, I highly recommend doing so. Not only is it one of the best television series ever to be made (my personal opinion), but it is also one of the most inspirational. Meredith Grey has had a tough life, ranging from her mother’s Alzheimer’s disease and lack of a father to going through medical school to her corrupted love affairs. Her trials and triumphs as a character can teach us a lot as we embark on our college endeavors. Here are some of the most inspirational, motivational and moving lines that Meredith Grey has said over the past ten seasons
It is unfortunate that time and time again we see celebrities of all ages go down a path of self-destruction; this past week, Justin Bieber has proved to be no exception.
When I first heard the word mindfulness, I pictured some state of mind one only finds in a yoga class. Yet the word itself proves otherwise. Originating out of Buddhist practices, mindfulness is the ability to actively be aware of your thoughts, feelings and the environment around you. Mindfulness also integrates a feeling of acceptance and ownership toward your thoughts and feelings by removing judgmental views and centering in the present. Now, you may be thinking, “Okay, that sounds great… but I’m a busy college student. What does this mean to me?” My answer is… a lot. A recent study done by the University of Miami showed that students who took a seven-week mindfulness training course improved attention, decreased stress and lessened mind wandering against a control group who didn’t receive training.
