College Life Lessons from Meredith Grey

If you haven’t devoted at least one hour of your life to watching Grey’s Anatomy, I highly recommend doing so. Not only is it one of the best television series ever to be made (my personal opinion), but it is also one of the most inspirational. Meredith Grey has had a tough life, ranging from her mother’s Alzheimer’s disease and lack of a father to going through medical school to her corrupted love affairs. Her trials and triumphs as a character can teach us a lot as we embark on our college endeavors. Here are some of the most inspirational, motivational and moving lines that Meredith Grey has said over the past ten seasons

1. “Change… We don’t like it, we fear it. But we can’t stop it from coming. We either adapt to change, or we get left behind. It hurts to grow. Anybody who tells you it doesn’t, is lying. But here’s the truth: Sometimes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. And sometimes, oh, sometimes, change is good. Sometimes, change is… everything.”

This quote is particularly relevant to us as college students. Whether you are a college freshman just beginning to explore the vast world of college that lies before you, a senior who is searching for that dream job that they have been chasing for the last four years or the doctoral student that is exploring new possibilities in whatever your passion may be. Change is the only constant in our lives. Just remember, as we embark on whatever journey that lies ahead of us, change is good.

2. “Sometimes, the key to making progress is to recognize how to take that very first step. Then you start your journey. You hope for the best and you stick with it, day in and day out. Even if you’re tired, even if you want to walk away. You don’t. Because you are a pioneer. But nobody ever said it’d be easy.”

Finding your own niche can be hard to do in a sea of 30,000 students. Get involved in any way that you can, whether it is a club that meets once a month or playing a club or varsity sport. Expose yourself to new ideas and people because you do not know how much you will love or hate something until you give it a shot.

3. “Failure is inevitable, unavoidable but failure should never get the last word. You have to hold on to what you want. You have to not take no for an answer and take what’s coming to you. Never give in, never give up. Stand up. Stand up and take it.”

If you have made it this far in life, then it is inevitable that you have experienced failure in some way, and that is completely normal. Overcoming failure is also completely normal. If you never failed, then you have also never succeeded. So when you do not get that internship that you applied for or your exam grade was not as high as you expected it to be, use that failure as fuel to succeed the next time around.

Meredith Grey has many wise words that are applicable to every life situation. I hope that these quotes will motivate, inspire, and move you to have a great college experience.
