To many fourth-year students, sleep is not a common activity. Priorities such as finding a job and solidifying a career path come first. However, SGTV station manager and multi-talented broadcast journalism major Paul Critzman likes to take this to the next level. “I’m running on four hours of sleep,” he explains. “Previously I was up for 36 hours because I was working at the WUSC radio station.”

“I believe that everyone should push one another in a positive way to be the best,” Will Fortanbary, a fourth year media arts student stated. “A lot of that happens in person to person interactions. People and the conversations we have with them are the most important things in life.”

Caleb Coker is just one of the tens of thousands of students that attend the University of South Carolina. In that regard, he is very common. However, he is also something not many students here can say they are: a drag queen. Drag is a performance art in which a man impersonates a woman or a woman impersonates a man. But Caleb’s drag persona, Ebony Would, is not just an impersonation or a character. “Ebony is a part of me. I simply exaggerate Caleb’s personality and put on a giant wig and prance around,” says the fourth year music education student and violist.

During the fall semester, most weekends are consumed by the hype of football games. This season, however, there have been a number of away games, and two bye-weeks in the schedule. There are those who will continue the classic game day ritual in their living room or sports bar, patiently awaiting the next home game. For others, the call for a new adventure is on their minds. Thankfully, South Carolina is surrounded by endless opportunities for a unique and inexpensive weekend. Here are a few places calling your name, urging you to break from the beaten path.

You have probably seen countless blog posts and testimonies about how great studying abroad is, and many students probably will go on to study abroad. There always seems to be those students, however, who have something seriously holding them back from it. Before I studied abroad in London this past spring semester, I never felt nervous about it. I knew since before I came to college that I wanted to study abroad. However, I do sympathize with students who are fearful of, because it is a big undertaking. The thing is though, it is more than worth it. Any hassle you might have in order to get yourself abroad will seem minor compared to the experience you will get out of it.

The infamous New York fashion industry didn’t intimidate fourth-year fashion merchandising student Sophie Kerr-Dineen when it came to internships in the concrete jungle. “New York always seemed so magical– full of opportunity and interesting people,” says Sophie.

After two years of excruciating training at the South Carolina Governor’s School of the Arts, Davis Dykes continues on his career path at the University of South Carolina. He is a first-year vocal performance major that has always had a special love of classical music; opera to be exact.

Your college years, everyone asserts, “are the best years of your life. ” As much as I loathe clichés, I can’t help but concur. Exemplified in my life by the liberty to choose classes and the lack of an uptight dress code (which spells death, in my opinion, to the fashion-forward girl), everything about this campus screams autonomy. However, one must learn to manage this freedom.

Social media is great way for a college campus to connect. Large schools like the University of South Carolina can feel a little smaller with sites like Facebook and Twitter. Students are updated on events they can attend or find out what other people on campus are doing. Sitting in class—whether warranted or not—you can see the scope of social media. People are always on their phones or computers checking their accounts.
