These secondhand costumes come in all shapes and sizes, and have been made from all types of recycled clothing and materials. Some are fabulous and some are fails. Although your thrifted option may be cheap, it won’t always be chic. See which knock-off costumes we would choose, and decide how you will go out this October 31!
*Hippie*
Mixed
It’s okay to mix it up
sometimes and splurge a little here and there while thrifting. This outfit makes great use of thrift store and name-brand finds, or even items you already own. You can even recycle these chic pieces! Because you’d
regularly pay hundreds of dollars for a full outfit, $34 for this costume is nothing!
Halloween Express
Although this dress makes a cute costume, at $34.99, it costs more than an entire thrifted outfit! You would never wear this except on Halloween, and it’s just not a price-wise option compared to its totally wearable,
thrifty counterpart.
*Hugh Hefner*
Goodwill Clearance of Columbia, SC
This thrift store find is a total steal for only $1.29! The slippers add a comical aspect to the completely believable smoking jacket, which was made iconic by Hefner himself. You’ll be the life of the party, just like Hef, in this getup.
Halloween Express
You’d never pay $39.99 for a robe in real life, and you shouldn’t do it for a costume. Cheaper versions of this exact piece are everywhere, so save your money and get thrift store savvy.
*Evil Witch*
Goodwill Clearance of West Columbia, SC
Though this outfit most
definitely screams evil, it’s not the perfect witch ensemble. Without the characteristic pointy hat
and broomstick, you could end up looking like a simple
fashion disaster. But if you’ve got a conical cap lying around, this option is quite kind to your wallet: it’s only $1.29 for the dress and boots.
Halloween Express
At $42.97, you would be splurging a bit for this costume, but it would totally be worth it to go out in style this Halloween. Wouldn’t you rather be the cute witch than that girl dressed in the frumpy black frock? And if you’re going to a party and just can’t be bothered to carry around that broom, you’ll save $6.99, bringing your outfit to only $35.98!
*Tacky Tourist *
His House in West Columbia
After one look at this thrift store gem, you’d think this is actually where tacky tourists shop! The outfit is reminiscent of your grandpa on vacation and, even more importantly, it only costs $12!
Halloween Express
In total, this costume costs a whopping $85.96! Other pitfalls of this outfit are its lack of props and originality. You would save $73.96 if you thrifted this costume, which is the price of about 15 beers at a bar!
*Under The Sea*
Thrift Store, Columbia, S.C.
This option lacks any style or direction whatsoever.
Mermaids just don’t thrift shop, so the price is nice, but it’s just not right! Don’t waste your $6 dollars on this costume.
Halloween Express
$36.99 isn’t bad for a fashion-forward costume like this. Give Ariel a run for her money, along with every other girl out this Halloween, by adding your favorite pair of heels.

Spin class is excellent cardio. You can burn enough calories in one class to sneak in a drunk Sonic burger and still feel pretty solid about it. With this glorious news, you should feel optimistic (and maybe even—wait for it—excited) to attend your first class. But fast-forward to the morning of and—well, let’s take a look.

What will make a painfully awkward and shy girl feel outside of her comfort zone? (Hint: I am the awkward and shy girl). The answer is obvious: the spotlight. Put me in front of a room full of people, and I will blush harder than a little girl in front of her first crush. And what better organization to put that spotlight right on me than Off-Off Broadway?

Let’s get one thing straight: I have the natural rhythm of a blind and deaf cockatoo that’s just been given an exorbitant amount of LSD. I don’t know why, but when I try and feel the music, I end up looking less like Chris Brown at the VMAs and more like Taylor Swift at the VMAs. There’s a lot of unnecessary hand motions and bopping up and down. So, I decided to suck up my pride, cobble together a sense of altruism and dive head first into the Rik-a-Sha dance club here at USC.

Wes Williams stood anxiously backstage for the opening night of his seventh grade acting debut. The show was “The Big Bad Musical,” and he was the lead. Williams listened to the chatter of the audience; butterflies fluttered in the pit of his stomach as his excitement grew. The curtain rose and with it, a dream.

“The World is your Oyster,” my dad told me when I turned 18 and was about to start my first year at university; but what did it even mean? The world was mine for the taking, yet where was I supposed to begin? I could choose whichever life path took my fancy, but I was still playing laundry Jenga and eating baked beans out of the tin.

The smart and quirky rock/folk/electronic band alt-J (∆) has released their second full-length album for the masses to stream, fittingly titled “This is All Yours.” Many artists are doomed to a “sophomore slump” – especially since this group had a grueling, relentless tour (back-to-back US festivals such as Bonnaroo, Cochella, Lollapalooza, Sasquatch, and South by Southwest) as well as guitarist/bassist Gwil Sainsbury departure for “personal reasons.”

By now, you’ve all heard of “The Simpsons.” It’s pretty hard not to, what with their cartoony faces being on everything from comics to cereal boxes to toilet paper. Heck, my eighth grade English teacher showed a clip from an early Simpsons episode as part of her lesson on Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven.” (By the way, if you haven’t seen “The Simpsons‘” take on “The Raven,” you should watch it. It’s gold.)

All hail the queen! Queen Cher, to be exact. Once again the music veteran is bringing her talents to the stage with her “Dressed to Kill Tour,” more widely known as the “D2K Tour.” With dates all over the country, this powerhouse singer is giving her fans what they want for the next few months.

Everyone is constantly searching for the next best and most innovative thing. Whether it’s makeup, clothing, tools, or services if it’s new and improved, we have all got to have it. There is no shame in our game. You’ve got to keep up. Yeah, there are certainly some bad eggs out there every once and a while. I’m sure there’s at least one woman that got reeled into buying one of those awful P-Mates (the device meant to help females pee in public like men). She and her bank account are probably still dwelling over that purchase, but here are a few investments that you may want to make.

This summer I went with my family on vacation to San Francisco. We got into town in the early evening, after an eight-hour drive up the coast from Los Angeles. Traffic was brutal, and we had opted to take the longer but more scenic route up the coast (which was totally worth it, because I got to see actual, real-life, wild sea lions and walruses.) We checked into the hotel, frazzled and exhausted, and I sat in my room for maybe five minutes before heading to the most anticipated destination of my trip – City Lights Books.

You are a young boy in rising Asia. You come from a small, rural village, but your life changes when your family moves into the city, giving you the opportunity to get a better education. Your whole life is filled with these small choices, and the many decisions that you make that turn you into a rich businessman. Well, the hypothetical “you,” anyway.

When I first heard about the new reality show on VH1, “Dating Naked”, I was shocked. I couldn’t believe they were airing a show of people going on casual dates, completely nude. Let’s be honest, there’s nothing casual about that.

Walking along the brick paths of the Horseshoe, you’ve undoubtedly heard a foreign accent or an unfamiliar language blowing on the wind. You’ve probably seen more “Study Abroad” posters tacked up to the bulletin boards of residence halls and classrooms than you could ever care to count. You’ve almost definitely heard at least one person tell you all about the numerous benefits to studying abroad. (And trust me, they are quite numerous).

Think of all the pictures you carry around on your phone everyday. Last Saturday’s blurry pictures with a bunch of people you can’t remember from Five Points, a few saved Snapchats from your best friends, and maybe… just maybe, you have a few “risqué” pictures saved on your camera roll.
