Your eyes stare blankly ahead, focusing but never really focusing. They glaze over themselves as they become overwhelmed with what they are seeing. Your hands move in slow, predictable movements, enough to keep a steady stream of information flowing from the fountain. Your fingers move swiftly. This is a motion you’ve done thousands of times, a movement so known to you that it isn’t even noticeable. Your brain turns itself off, the senses bombarded with loud sounds and bright flashes of light that dull you until you don’t even remember where you are. And so the spiral continues, the fountain of information flowing and flowing, never-ending, like a river that stretches into the ocean.

While many of us can share the same experiences, we are all destined for different paths. Yet, as we climb the ladder towards our goals, there are moments when we feel discouraged. We may see one of our peers receiving higher marks for the same efforts that we implemented. We may see someone with the same desires as us progressing faster. Before we realize it, we may be sinking down the rabbit hole of comparing and contrasting our lives to others. We’ll start to forget that we are not all the same and attempt to mimic others while sacrificing our own identities.

The Pill. The Implant. The Shot. The Ring. The Patch. The IUD. With so many options, choosing a birth control can be a daunting task for so many women. It’s natural to have questions about which method works best, what the side effects might be and how the pros and cons of different methods measure up. Choosing a birth control can also be a scary endeavor. The lack of information combined with the stigma surrounding the use of contraceptives makes it tricky to detect fiction from fact and fear tactics from the truth.

The hospital can be a scary place for a child patient. They may be in an unfamiliar setting, hooked up to an array of machines and not told what is going on. Doctors may come in with the dreaded syringes and needles, and patients could be away from their friends for an indefinite amount of time. These things can lead to an early fear of the hospital, which can manifest into distrust of doctors later in life. Fortunately, the Child Life program at Prisma Health Children's Hospital understands how easily this fear can develop and tries to combat it through various activities and opportunities directed towards young patients.

I have thought of myself as someone who loved going to school for as long as I can remember. Learning brings me joy and has helped me recognize more about myself than anything else in my life. Additionally, I have had many outstanding educators throughout my schooling career who have aided in shaping me into the young woman I am today. My parents took the permissive parenting approach and maintained it my entire upbringing, meaning there was not a lot of structure in my day-to-day life, and very few rules. School was the only place I had a consistent schedule and knew what to expect. It gave me a sense of security.

It was in fifth grade. Four days after my eleventh birthday. I was filled with nothing but immersion in Tuck Everlasting and a copious amount of grape Fanta from our class Christmas celebration. I was sitting in the designated “girls” bathroom, getting light-headed from the flickering overhead light as I stared at my now blood-stained, polka-dotted underwear in disbelief. I convinced myself I was just dying. There was no way I had just gotten my period.

College students accomplish extraordinary things, both inside and outside of the classroom. In order to be successful, it takes time, discipline and hard work. We see this among Gamecock athletes and Honors College scholars, but what about the students who sacrifice their time to financially sustain themselves? Perhaps you have seen them wearing their work uniforms around campus, or even jogging with their backpack and textbooks because their shift starts in thirty minutes. Maybe you yourself have scrolled through Indeed.com during class to see which employment options could benefit you. Tons of restaurants and corporations are handing out signing bonuses, wage raises and more benefits right now to gain back what they have lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They are offering what they can to keep their current staff and hire new employees. These benefits are undoubtedly alluring, especially to a young adult wanting or needing to find a job, but is now really the best time for full-time students to take on part-time jobs?

When the FDA approved the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccination for public use in December of 2020, there was a sigh of relief felt around the country and the world. Soon after its release, both Moderna and Johnson & Johnson released similar vaccines. Now, in March 2021, these vaccines are finally becoming more accessible to the general public, beyond essential workers and those with pre-existing conditions. With around 14% of the population vaccinated in late March 2021, things are starting to look up. Even though students on campus have begun getting vaccinated, not every student is jumping in line to get their shot next. However, some are committed to getting involved in the vaccination process.
