Tucked in a West Columbia strip mall, there is a gem of a cafe waiting to be discovered. With its lovely natural light, friendly service and craveable, affordable menu Lindo Cafe is a must-try for locals and those just passing through.
I'm somewhat of a coffee shop fanatic, as I suspect many writers are, perpetually on the hunt for the perfect combination of atmosphere and delicious fare that will allow me to transcend distraction entirely. I've been to nearly every cafe in Columbia both on and off the beaten path, and I have to say this taste of Mexican culture more than stacks up to the competition.
Lindo Cafe's bright, clean interior and plush chairs invite even the most neurotic of college students to take a deep breath and inhale the smell of freshly brewed coffee.
The coffee itself is a delight, but the specialty lattes are really where the drink menu shines. The line between a bitter latte and a too sweet latte is a thin one, and Lindo Cafe walks it beautifully. The horchata latte is rich and smooth, while the churro latte offers guests brightness and flavor. Coming in at under $6 each, a latte is more than doable on a budget.
While one is waiting in line to buy a coffee, it's only natural their eye might land on the breads and pastries lined up in the display case. The concha, a Mexican sweet bread, has a light, open texture and the sugary topping provides right gentle crunch.
As far as hot food on the menu, favorites include tamales and chilaquiles which include a protein and sauce of your choice. Whether green or red sauce captures one's attention, a customer is sure not to be disappointed. But the green sauce carries a slow heat and deep flavor which is tough to beat.
Open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day but Sunday, it might be a good idea to add Lindo Cafe to your weekly coffee shop rotation.
