Letter from the Editor: An apology

Garnet & Black recently published an article about Rukia Brooks for our Artist in Residence series, and it was brought to my attention that the term "colored female" was used in reference to a character in one of Brooks' projects. During the process of editing, one of the many people that edits our articles changed "woman of color" to "colored female," which is a demeaning and offensive term, and should not have been published. This change went unnoticed, and that is at the fault of myself and our staff. Student Media is a learning environment, therefore mistakes are made, but publishing offensive terms is completely unacceptable. I would like to apologize to our readers for this mistake. A correction has been made to the online version of this story — we will do better.

Sincerely,

Erika Ryan, Editor-in-Chief
