What do sales, chic-flicks, and August 26th all have in common? Other than the overwhelming ability to draw female forces together in an environment of camaraderie and girl-power, not very much. Yet, the significance of August 26th to bring together and empower many women in fashion and well-themed films should not be lost upon us. Yes, that simple date does much more than hold a place on your calendar, it started a movement and continues one now, in 2014.

America is addicted to romance. Through books, television, and movies we see countless forms of love and affection, and in a sense, receive a fantasized depiction on what love should be. We’ve been told that love is “destiny” and “never having to say you’re sorry.” In reality, love is hard and takes effort to perfect. That is why FX’s “You’re the Worst” is one of the best shows about love: it never tries to be something it’s not.

As I sat at my desk, in a little village in North-West London suburbia, I dreamt of the promise land. THE USA! Five months of hot weather, accents and southern hospitality was coming my way and I couldn’t have been more excited. I romanticized constantly by listening to Lana Del Rey, eating at the new local Five Guys, and beginning to get ready to immerse myself into this completely new experience.

The lineup for this year’s iHeartRadio Music Festival might be enough to make you pack your bags and take a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada. With artists from Weezer to One Direction to Nicki Minaj, it’s definitely going to be a place to be.

In the opening scene of Stephanie Perkins’ latest novel, Isla and the Happily Ever After, the protagonist, Isla (pronounced like “island”), has just gotten her wisdom teeth out, and is high on painkillers. She’s sitting at a café near her home in New York City, and she sees her crush, Josh, where they’re both staying for the summer. Isla and Josh both attend S.O.A.P. (School of America in Paris), a setting that Perkins’ readers have long been familiar with, as it was the same school that protagonist Anna attended in her first novel, Anna and the French Kiss.

Walk to the beat of your own drum, but listen to the music around you.

So classes are about to start up and so is the craving for new music for our daily commute to campus. What do we do? We go to the iTunes top singles list or type in that same band name we’ve been listening to since 2010. Not that there’s a problem with this, but it’s time for a change and our devices are begging us to download something new.

Everyone needs to be passionate about something, to give purpose to life. For some people, that passion might be reading or painting. For me, it’s food—specifically, cheese and bread. As I outgrow the miraculous metabolism of teenagers, however, I have begun to realize that my diet of Brie, French bread, and wine isn’t doing me any favors. This school year, I decided to embark on a journey to find the tastiest, healthiest, simplest, (and cheapest!) recipes each week. In the search for these recipes, I plan to leave no stone unturned and no superfood untested. My hope is that my passion for food and my role as guinea pig might combine to create believers in the power of good, healthy food.
I decided that if I was really going to do this experiment in healthy eating, I might as well jump in headfirst, so for my first meal, I picked the superfood quinoa. Quinoa is a small, round whole grain that is rich in both protein and fiber, making it great for vegetarians and anyone who has trouble keeping up their iron. Another plus: Quinoa is gluten-free, making it a perfect grain for those with gluten intolerances or allergies.
I love the Grecian quinoa salad that I found on myrecipes.com because it is a very versatile summer dish. The quick prep time, summer vegetables, and cheap ingredients make it perfect for a picnic or dinner. Because it is so low in calories (under 400 per serving) it felt perfectly acceptable to have for dinner with a glass of wine, which makes this recipe an automatic win in my book. The variety of colors—green, yellow, white, red, and brown—made for a beautiful presentation. The dish is not too strong and really brings out the texture of the quinoa while allowing all of the other ingredients to make themselves known.
Using chicken broth to cook the quinoa made it even more flavorful; of course, if you don’t eat meat, the chicken broth could always be substituted by vegetable broth. Since I couldn’t find radicchio in any grocery stores around me, I ended up using baby arugula instead, which still lent a zesty bite to the dish. The salad took a total of about 45 minutes to prepare, and I was able to eat it for dinner, as a side with lunch the next day, and even as a snack the day after that. I will definitely be making this for my next potluck!
You can find the recipe used here.

After waiting 4 months for a rescheduled show to happen after the original show was cancelled due to a case of the flu, I was finally able to attend Miley Cyrus first tour (apart from Disney), respectfully called the Bangerz Tour. For those of you that don’t know who Miley Cyrus is, (and for those that need a little refresher), Cyrus is a globally known American pop sensation that took the world by storm in 2006 with her Disney TV debut on the musical sitcom Hannah Montana. October 2013 saw Cyrus drop her first solo effort “BANGERZ” which landed at the top of the Billboard 200 Charts, with the highly anticipated first single “We Cant Stop” and the ever-controversial #1 single “Wrecking Ball” that helped push the album to the top.

It’s now the time of year when countdowns begin. For Gamecocks, it’s 18 days until classes begin in Columbia. For seniors, it’s 281 days until we walk across that stage. And for football fans, it’s only 26 days until the first kickoff in Williams-Brice Stadium.

Swimsuit season is upon us, folks, and with it comes a desire to look like Kate Upton while simultaneously eating your weight in Famous Amos cookies. Why does food have to cause us to gain weight? Why can’t we live in a utopian society where being a bad person causes the scale to go up (Every insult equals one pound, maybe?), while cookies and fries and pizza are rewards for being fabulous people?

It’s Saturday afternoon. A living room in Columbia is full of nervously giggling six-year-old girls. Suddenly, the performer they’ve been waiting for walks in. Blue eyes, curly blonde hair, sparkly guitar… Is it Taylor Swift? Close – it’s T-Swift impersonator and third year PR student Elizabeth Scarborough.

Oh, summer. We long for those endless days of sitting by the pool and driving with the windows rolled down. It seems those nights of cooking s’mores at a bonfire and having outdoor dinner parties cannot come soon enough. I always look forward to those hours with nothing to do after a long semester of tests and research papers. However, if you’re anything like me, sitting on the couch watching sitcoms gets old after a while and eventually that feeling of extreme boredom will begin to rear its ugly head. But don’t fret. This dilemma is easily avoided and I’m here to tell you how to never be bored in the summer of 2014, no matter where you are or how much time you have on your hands.

When we hear the phrase ‘post college,’ most of us picture some grey area – the unknown that is said to occur after graduation. As tempting as it is to stay in college forever, graduation is, hopefully, inevitable for most of us. We should try our best to be prepared for those endeavors that, as young people with college degrees, we are encouraged to experience. There are certain behaviors, both small and large, that we should (I know, I hate the s-word too) be participating in at some point in our four years here. All I’m here to do is suggest some of these behaviors that might get you a leg up each year so that you’re not floundering at the beginning of senior year with your backup plan of living at home with your parents becoming your primary plan.

The f word. I know what you’re thinking, but that’s not what I’m talking about it. The f word I’ve got on the brain is greasy, delicious, and highly addictive – food. There’s no denying it. Drinking makes us hungry. We begin most nights out looking to have a good time with our friends, but somehow we always end up in the Cookout drive-thru, impatiently waiting to devour our chicken quesadillas and slurp our milkshakes up through a frozen straw.
Does it have to be this way, though? The problem might seem simply too tough to tackle. Eating healthy can be difficult, particularly in the drunken early hours of the morning. Most of us can agree that what’s fun trumps what’s healthy. So, how can we compromise? Your friends at Garnet & Black are here to help. We have compiled a late-night healthy eating guide to assist you in making the right decision… even after a few drinks.
