How to Prevent Writers' Block

We have all been there. The long stares into space, the motionless hands hovering above your keyboard, and the surprising lack of creativity that suddenly engulfs your mind. You’ve guessed it: Writer’s block. Unfortunately, this disease has been crippling writers’ minds since the dawn of time. However, there is some good news! You are not alone in the struggle to prevent writer’s block. There are millions of people all over the world at this very second that are also staring aimlessly into space and searching the corners of their minds in hopes of curing their writer’s block.

So, what is the easiest thing to do when you are drawing a blank? Step away from the computer. Your computer can be your best friend, but in times like these it is your worst enemy. You could search the Internet for topics or ideas to write about, but that is kind of like giving up on your creative abilities. Instead, go for a walk on the river or the Horseshoe and let the fresh air and nature inspire you. If you enjoy exercising try putting on your favorite album, plugging in your headphones, and going for a nice long run (Personally I feel that running is one of the best cures). Maybe hanging out with friends, grabbing a bite to eat or venturing to a coffee shop for some espresso will also help clear your mind and stimulate your creativity, and thus solving your writer’s block.

Procrastination is the answer (to some extent). It is important to take a small break to help clear your mind, but that does not mean that you should spend five hours watching Netflix in efforts of solving your writer’s block. Sometimes you just have to plow through the assignment, get some words on a page, and then come back to revise it later.

Writer’s block can be cured in various ways. At the end of the day it all comes down to how you stimulate your own creativity, and that probably differs with each occasion. It may seem like the world is ending and there is no way to save yourself from the immense lack of creativity that is suppressing your mind, but just hang tight. Writer’s block is just a phase, and it will pass in no time.

Happy writing!
