Music Minute: Bastille

U.K. Natives, ‘80s-inspired musicians, and Billboard chart toppers.

Once solo-artist Dan Smith brought his friends together and created a band in 2010. Their first single and EP brought them positive attention across the U.K.’s music scene.

Four years later, they have a hit song, Pompeii, featured on their debut album Bad Blood. Pompeii has recently hit number-five on the Billboard Hot 100. The album “Bad Blood” has hit number-one in the U.K. While Pompeii is an upbeat song that holds lyrical depth, Bastille’s other tracks are breathtaking and inspiring as well.

Tracks like “Weight of Living, Pt. II,” “Flaws” and a rendition of the Christmas song Silent Night titled “The Silence” illustrate depth and creativity in their music and lyrics. Not only does Bas-tille’s music create a moving atmosphere, but the lyrics are vulnerable and raw.

The track “Flaws” expresses the depth of how individuals choose to share their shortcomings with loved ones. Another song on the album titled Bad Blood, the title track, expresses the decay and building of relationships with lyrical and musical profundity.

Lead singer Dan Smith claims in an interview to be a “massive pessimist,” which seems to inspire the more raw lyrics included in the band’s tracks. As an obviously talented lyricist and vocalist, he leads the band in writing and performing. When asked how he went from a solo artist to forming a band he expresses the support and positivity that comes from not being the center of attention. His timidity shows in the lyrics of the song “Flaws.”

Bastille has brought a new level of lyrical inspiration and depth to the pop music charts. The band’s growing success across the U.K. and now across the world has made them an inspiring and gifted band to watch in the coming months.
