The Artic Monkeys are an indie-rock band from England that have been around for about 10 years, but that is hardly stopping them. They were selling out crowds even before they released an album. Their album “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not” from 2006 was the fastest selling debut album in Great Britain. The Arctic Monkeys are also the first indie rock band that has had all five of their albums hit the top of the charts upon release. The Monkeys also played at the opening ceremony at the 2012 Olympics. Their newest album “AM” was released on Sept. 9, 2013 and is, in my opinion, the band’s best to date. The music is smooth, cool, and dare I say sexy. (Thanks to the smoldering Alex Turner). So what makes this band so great? Here are three reasons why Arctic Monkeys is the definition of cool.
1. Two words: Alex Turner. This front man is the only male I have ever seen rock the Clubmaster sunglasses inside and not look like a tool. His voice is smooth like velvet and can make anything sound sexy. He has the look, the voice, the musical talent, the GQ style/bad boy, the accent…basically everything a girl wants in a man. Not to mention he dated Alexa Chung, who could breathe on something and it be cool.
2. They covered “Come Together” by The Beatles… and it was actually a decent cover. I am one of those people that thinks you should leave some artists alone and not cover them, for example, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and *NSYNC. (But to be honest, why would anyone want to cover *NYSNC?). Most covers are mediocre at best, but The Arctic Monkeys are one of the best bands to cover The Beatles.
3. The newest album “AM” is the perfect mix of indie-rock with a slight R&B influence. The song “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” is the perfect college song that pretty much everyone can relate to. It’s also the question that I bet a lot of you ask yourself. The Arctic Monkeys have also perfected the art of the not-clique love song with the last track on the album called “I Wanna Be Yours. ” Thanks, guys!
The Artic Monkeys start its U.S. tour at the beginning of the year and will play in Charlotte, N.C. on Feb. 3.
