The Face of Pop: Girl Power in 2013

The ladies of pop music are stealing the entire show lately; between Miley Cyrus, Lana Del Rey and Lorde, it is a hard decision figuring out which diva is the reigning empress. These ladies are bringing in a new style of pop than what we have been hearing the past few years, and I really like this change.

Cyrus went from Disney’s sweetheart to twerking on teddy bears. If that isn’t enough of a change, look at what she’s been wearing—or rather, what she’s not. Her performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards was shocking (as we all know by now), but I think this is exactly what she wanted.

Cyrus kept the sex-fueled publicity going with her latest smash “Wrecking Ball,” which dropped the day after her VMA performance. The booming pop track came with a video featuring Cyrus riding on a wrecking ball in the buff. I think it is a genius video and an even more genius move. Good press or bad press—it is still press. Whether you love or hate the new songs and image, you are talking and buying into Cyrus. This is exactly what she wants.

While Cyrus likes to show off in her music videos, Del Rey’s videos take a more cinematic approach. Her song “Summertime Sadness” reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.

A 16-year-old girl from New Zealand that goes by Lorde has literary blown up overnight. Her song “Royals” reached #3 on the Hot 100 this week. Her EP “The Love Club” is new and inventive…and definitely worth downloading.

Cyrus, Del Rey and Lorde all bring something new and fresh to the scope of pop music. Let’s hear it for the ladies—it looks like 2013 is their year.
