New York Fashion Week: The Lowdown

September 5 through the 12 marked one of the most wonderful times of the year: Mercedes-Benz Spring 2014 New York Fashion Week. The excitement of this weeklong event feels similar to a very first trip to Disney World. So maybe there are no questionable people walking around in gigantic mouse suits promising endless fun, but Mickey and Florida have nothing on the magic that has happened this week in New York City.

Perfect humans wearing beautifully made clothing have graced the runways. Celebrities, including a creepy mustached Justin Bieber and a Kim K. less Kayne West, sat on the front row with bloggers, editors and fashion’s HBIC Anna Wintour. Meanwhile, backstage there was a whirlwind of fabric, makeup and half-clothed models.

Somehow, through all of the chaos, a flawless show for each designer was produced. With so many shows over the course of this week. it is overwhelming to try and keep up. I have found myself asking these questions. What are the new trends for spring 2014? Who are the best designers? Did I actually just see Anna Wintour smile? Also, why is Cara Delevingne hanging out with Rihanna instead walking runways? (With that said, shout out to Karlie Kloss for killin’ it every time she opens and closes a show) To try and keep some of the many collections straight, I have picked three of my favorite shows to highlight.

Alexander Wang

Alexander Wang’s collections are always my favorites. His Spring s014 garments had a perfect ‘90s vibe. Many of his pieces featured his logo, which he was not done in the past. Along with his genius branding, Wang stated that he wants his collection to resemble a time when “fashion was really fun, when there was wit and humor, and it wasn’t so serious.” A man after my own heart, I believe having fun with fashion is one of the most important things.

DKNY

This spring collection officially announced DKNY’s 25th anniversary. Donna Karan and her company revisited some of the line’s previous designs and added a modern twist. Track pants, denim overalls, sporty outerwear and sneaker wedges gave the show a street wear vibe. While sleek dresses and fluid fabrics added a hint of elegance. The show also transitioned through bandanna-printed pieces, fit-and-flare dresses and baseball caps. Singer Rita Ora, the current face of DKNY, closed the show by dancing down the runway. Overall, DKNY’s show was simply fun to watch and had some really great pieces!

BCBG Max Azria

BCBG’s collection started with a clean slate on the runway. The designers reconstructed and reinterpreted classic men’s shirts. The designs were unexpected, new and innovative. Chambray skirts and belts made out of shirt cuffs were among the few pieces that opened up the show. In the second half of the show, the garments resembled more of what BCBG usually creates. Although, most reviews are saying that they loved the fresh perspective of the opening, I am disagreeing. I fell head-over-heels for the black pieces with bright floral detailing, sheer panels and cutouts.
