Soapbox: Amoré Italian
Written by Lizzie Anstey and Fatima Boatright
It's the season of love, the time to show your special someone how you feel. You and your love might look to enjoy a taste of Italy, whose people are arguably the world’s romance and culinary pros. Should you empty your pockets on fancy pasta dishes in Lady and the Tramp style: candlelight and live musical accompaniment? Rather, do you get creative and devise an inexpensive alternative? Which is also Lady and the Tramp swag. (They ate for free in front of a dumpster.)
Splurge
By Lizzie Anstey
Dainty boxes of Sweethearts candies and heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are delicious, even addicting, but come on, guys... raise the romantic bar. Sure, it’s the thought that counts, but you’re just giving us excuses to stuff our faces with pink and red treats. Every girl wants to be treated, so go big or go home this year. Splurge on a romantic Italian dinner. We don’t need more chocolate in our secret stashes, and you’re lying if you say you wouldn’t enjoy a lavish three-course meal. I’m not saying book a gondola ride in Venice or hire crooning Italian waiters, but a step beyond the little box of chocolates means major brownie points with your significant other. We’re college students. The majority of our meals consists of Pop-Tarts, Ramen and the McDonald’s dollar menu. Why not treat ourselves to an elaborate dinner this month?
Don’t
By Fatima Boatright
Look, don’t spend more on an occasion when you can spend less—especially on a date. Perhaps you have been misled by popular notions that to woo the girl or guy of your dreams, you must burn through your paycheck. This is false. Feelings and emotions have little correlation with your spending budget. It may seem glorious to spoil your boo with lavish gifts, but speaking the language of love has never been easier. Become charming and suave: learn a few romantic Italian phrases (“Ti voglio bene”) to recite to your love on the special day. Draw a treasure map that leads to a special spot in the park where you set up a light display. Who says you have to throw down 50 bucks on an “authentic” Italian entrée when you can find low-cost Italian recipes online? (I recommend allrecipes.com). If you are planning a special date, set a small budget, and do your best to stay within your limit. You will think of fresh, creative ways to express your love. In the event that things don’t work out between you and said interest, you’ll be glad you didn’t spend a month’s worth of savings on a flame that lasted less time than a Kardashian marriage.
