All across campus, girls will leave the leggings and sweaters at home in favor of flaunting bare limbs. To ease this transition, designers have found a clear-cut (literally) way to show a little bit of skin without shedding too much fabric.
Sheer clothing, once reserved for triple-X videos and seedy street corners, found its way to the runway during Spring 2011 Fashion Week. Designers such as John Galliano, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Cynthia Rowley, pictured above, have discovered that less is more and that transparent is the new solid.
These designers, along with others, have found a daring yet tasteful way to display the true assets of a woman through the use of diaphanous fabrics.
Yet, the question remains: How do we regular folk pull off this peep-show phenomenon without looking like we belong in a skeezy Las Vegas “gentleman’s club”? The easiest way to showcase this trend is by layering, layering and more layering! For a subdued version of the look, throw on a sheer blouse with a camisole underneath. Or, place an opaque top over the blouse, displaying its sleeves for a funkier look.
For a night out on the town, pairing a solid-colored dress under that same blouse is a great way to look sexy and still leave some things to the imagination. And if you’re really brave, go in a completely different direction and try a sheer maxi dress or skirt. Just don’t forget to wear a cute slip!
This Valentine’s Day Nicki Minaj won’t be the only one singing, “You see right through me.” Your man will be sheerly delighted with your new look this season.
