Year after year, fashion critics have found themselves particularly bored with red
carpet style, often labeling celebrities as dressing "safe". There are numerous
reasons behind this boredom-induced brand, namely, the popularity of fashion
bloggers who are often bent on tearing through one celeb's bland red carpet
choice after another. But, if this year’s Golden Globe Awards is any inclination, it
seems that Hollywood’s megastars (and their stylists) are growing, err—gaining a
bit more confidence in the fashion department.
Deemed by several critics as the best in a while, the red carpet at the most
recent Golden Globes was chock-full of runway moments. From Anne Hathaway
wearing the closing look of the Armani Privé Fall 2010 Couture show, to both
Catherine Zeta Jones and Dianna Agron wearing pieces from Pre-Fall 2011
collections (Monique Lhullier and J. Mendel, respectively), the majority of which
are still in the process of debuting, the idea that the runway is too conceptual for
the masses may be slipping from predominance.
Green seemed to be the color du jour as Angelina Jolie, CZJ, Elizabeth Moss
and Mila Kunis all arrived in versions of emerald. There seemed to be a stylistic
divergence occurring on the red carpet that night. On the one hand, Claire
Danes and Emma Stone channeled clean minimalism, both wearing custom
Calvin Klein Collection pieces. Yet, on the other hand, CZJ and Mandy Moore
chose indulgent extravagance with full Monique Lhuillier gowns.
For many critics, this red carpet was especially refreshing. While names on the
best and worst dressed lists ranged, the general consensus is in: If stars keep
dressing like this, we’ll look forward to the next red carpet event.
