A New Idea In Campus Safety

It's easy to be critical of USC's Student Government for its inefficiency. But a new proposal that would provide free taxicab rides to students is brilliant.

If the taxicab proposal is enacted, any student can hail a cab, free of charge. It will go within 5 miles of campus and is paid for by student activity fees. It will effectively replace Cocky's Caravan, the failed bus service.

The Cocky's Caravan idea was great. Free bus transportation from hospitality districts to campus is an overwhelming positive, but it wasn't promoted and never caught on. It also wasn't catered to off-campus students, who weren't served by rides back to campus.

Sure, there are purists who would like to believe underage students don't think. And if they do drink, those same people believe dollars shouldn't support the behavior. But that's not a realistic view. We all have friends who drink and drive. It's sad, criminal and deadly. It doesn't have to be that way.

Just as the sun will come up in the morning, this is a simple reality: Students will go to Five Points. The bars will eventually close. And students will need a ride home.

If SG enacts this proposal, markets it effectively and provides the funds for it to continue, it could quickly save lives and arrests. If even one person takes advantage of this service, it's served a greater good. It would also change the stigma of ineffectiveness for a beleaguered organization that tries so hard and often fails at being viewed as successful.
