Poet of the Hour: Anis Mojgani

Anis Mojgani is a 37-year-old spoken word poet and musician based in Austin, Texas. He graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts in Performing Arts. This two-time National Poetry Slam Champion and winner of International Poetry Slam was also a speaker for the TEDx Program.

Some of his well-known poetic works include “Shake the Dust,” “Come Closer” and “Airplanes.” Mojgani has published three collections of poetry along in addition to other works that have been published in various anthologies and journals. His poetry collections are titled “Songs From Under the River” (2013), “The Feather Room” (2010) and “Over the Anvil we Stretch” (2008). Mojgani is also founder of the poetry performance group “Poetry Revival” that toured from 2007-2010. This tour involved Mojgani as well as two other poets Buddy Wakefield and Derrick Brown. The trio asked guest poets and musicians to tour the country with them as they performed to various audiences.

What I find so amazing about Mojgani’s poetry is its ability to easily relate to any audience. Within one of his pieces you could relate to many different comparisons or metaphors that he states, but somehow there is always one point that seems to really hit home. That point varies from person to person based on their past experiences and knowledge and it what makes his work so unique.

Badilisha Poetry, a website dedicated to featuring poets of all sorts, calls Mojgani “the most accomplished Slam Poet of our generation.” I encourage you to take a look at his work and listen to how he performs them with a peaceful yet assertive tone. If you are having a rough day or perhaps need a touch of inspiration in your life, Mojgani’s poem offer a magnificent breath of fresh air.
