Music Minute: Sam Smith

Small-village native, soul-influenced vocalist, and Billboard chart topper.

Sam Smith’s original fame sparked from featuring on the hit single “Latch by Disclosure,” a more electric and upbeat track. He then released his track “Lay Me Down” which was a much softer piece but still expressed his passion and talent for writing and vocals. The song “La La La” by Naughty Boy also gained him a lot of public attention. Sam Smith released an E.P. titled “Nirvana” in January of 2014. He now possesses a number-one single, Money On My Mind to be featured on his album coming in June..

Smith’s lyrics express an emotional rawness that he feels expresses himself in a relatable way to his audience. He explains in an interview, “I think Im just a normal 21 year old guy. I am what you see. I want as many people as I can to hear my music and what Im saying, its very simple – it’s not that complex…when people love my songs it means that much more. Its all much more personal and emotional.” His songs possess and honesty and depth that makes the vocal and musical superiority that much more impressive.

In an interview Sam Smith expresses his plan to keep his music alive in order for as many people to hear it as possible. “Don’t get comfortable in the sounds that are presented to you. It’s never going to stay the same. I always want to change and take risks – I want to constantly challenge myself.” He explains that his music will always be a raw and honest version of himself, but the music that comes out of it will always be changing.

The hit songs that Smith has either produced himself, or been featured on hold power, but personal songs like “Nirvana,” and “Safe With Me” contain the same level of rawness and power. Smith’s entire E.P. is worth listening to, as the world awaits the talented artist’s full album coming in June.
