Music Minute: Lorde

New Zealand native, 17-year-old, and Billboard chart-topper.

Lorde, now with over one million records sold, has been leaving audiences across the world awestruck by her talent.

Songs like Royals, her Billboard number-one, and Team, now number-six on the Billboard Hot 100, showcase her inspiring skill and charisma. Other tracks on her debut album are also worth more than a listen.

Tracks like White Teeth Teens, Glory and Gore and Bravado show deeper thought behind Lorde’s music and lyrics. As a 17-year old, Lorde holds a enchanting perspective on both the world she sees and the world she has been thrown into through her music. The tracks on Lorde’s debut album contain both musical and lyrical thought and attention to detail.

White Teeth Teens expresses Lorde’s confidence in being unusual and uncommon. Bravado expresses her inspiration that came from Kanye West’s lyric, “I found bravery in my bravado” as she decided that she would only become brave if she searched for bravery with boldness to reach her dreams and desires as a musician and individual.

In an interview with Lorde she explains, “I’m always trying to push everything right down to like, five words saying exactly what I want to in a short space of time…perfect.” Her lyrical details express this desire through the extensive thought she is able to fit into her lyrics. As shown in her number-one hit Royals and her track Ribs, her musical details are also inspired by the impact of rhythm found in traditional poetry. These tracks contain little music besides vocals and rhythm expressing a version of lyrical, vocal poetry.

As Lorde has made obvious through her recent success as an artist, she is a musician to be watching in the near, and hopefully distant, future.
