Music at the Oscars

Everyone knows that the best time of the year is award show season and they usually save the best for last, which was the Oscars on March 2nd. From the snazzy, tuxedo-clad men (hello… Jared Leto’s Yves Saint Laurent tux) to the gorgeous gowns we wish we had an occasion to wear them to, these nights full of glamour are filled with celebrities, laughs, and musical performances. The best of the best perform at these exclusive events so we expect obviously that the best will perform.

Oscar’s Sunday brought a ton of musical acts and I have to say that I did have quite a few favourites and a couple that were kind of a let down. My all time favourite was the completely legendary Karen O who preformed “The Moon Song” with Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend. While the song was slightly slow and made you restless watching it was by far the greatest, and it was Oscar-nominated from the movie Her directed by Spike Jonze. It might just be my love for both of the bands that make this my ultimate favourite because I am a little biased towards Koenig. (Side note: Follow him on Twitter because he is hilarious)

Pharrell has been the king of the limelight recently with his hats and at the Oscars that was no different. His performance of “Happy” really did make me “feel like a room without a roof” if you see what I did there. He is consistently good and his performance was even better with Lupita Nyong’o dancing with him, which was a really great surprise.

The act I could have lived without though is Pink’s performance of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. While I love the Wizard of Oz and have nothing against Pink, I just really don’t like listening or watching people sing the song. I just really don’t like ballads very much; it makes me feel like I’m sitting in my grandma’s car. Whether you loved the performance, or didn’t really care for it the main purpose was to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Wizard of Oz and to honor Judy Garland.

Other performances of the night included U2 playing “Ordinary Love” which was just as legendary Bono himself, Bette Midler singing “Wind Beneath My Wings”. Another great performance was Idina Menzel singing “Let it Go” from the movie Frozen which I feel like I would have appreciated more if I saw Frozen but I didn’t, so oh well.
