Five Books You Need to Read (Or Re-Read)

Whenever the seasons begin to change and the temperature begins to drop, I always reach for a new book to read. There is nothing better to me than a warm cup of coffee, a cozy blanket, and a new book. So I have compiled a list of books that consists of some old favorites and a couple new best-sellers.

1. “The Hobbit: – J.R.R. Tolkien

Unlike “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “The Hobbit” requires no prior knowledge of “The Shire” or “Middle Earth.” This book started it all and is a great adventure to uncover in preparation of the new movie.

2. “The Glass Castle” – Jeannette Walls

This memoir tells the fascinating story of Walls family and their lives as nomads, traveling from town to town. This story demonstrates the struggles of growing up and the ever-changing perceptions we have of our families.

3. “A Prayer for Owen Meany” – John Irving

“A Prayer for Owen Meany” tells the story of Johnny Wheelwright and his best friend Owen Meany. From the moment Owen is introduced, he demonstrates “God-like” qualities that could only be created by Irving. This book is a must-read that will captivate you from the beginning.

4. “Bossypants” – Tina Fey

This autobiography topped the “New York Times’” best-sellers for five weeks when it was released two years ago. In the novel, Fey describes the events that inspired her to become the comedy legend she is today. She begins with her childhood and the near death experience that led to the large scar located on her cheek and ends with the inspiration for her hit Mean Girls. This autobiography will have you laughing for hours.

5. “Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything” – Steven Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner

Two professional economists go on a limb with their studies in this book that details abnormal topics. This novel combines traditional economic theories with pop cultural to create a very enlightening and entertaining read.
