Baby, It's Cold Outside

The past couple of days, the mild and “famously hot” city of Columbia, South Carolina has received an unbelievable amount of cold weather. From wearing shorts and T-shirts to class one day, and breaking a sweat on the way to class, to sweatpants, and sweatshirts, paired with the occasional North Face jacket or a scarf in a matter of hours.

With this sudden shock of cold weather, the mood shifts on campus. No longer are we looking for the scenic way to class to kill some time; we find ourselves now rushing from point a to point b, finding a way to avoid the seemingly arctic weather at all costs.

Clarissa Silvagno, a freshman exercise science student, confirms the feelings of the masses; cold forces us back into bed. “The cold makes me fell like snuggling up in a warm blanket with some tea and Netflix.” She also says that “the cold makes me less productive because you just don’t wanna get out of bed! I’ve lived in the south practically my entire life and I’m definitely not used to it being this cold, especially this soon.” However, she says that it also gets her into the Holiday spirit, “It makes me feel so excited for Christmas!”

In the weeks leading up to final exams, and the end of the semester, marking the beginning of Winter Break, the cold may begin to creep into our work habits. Who wants to go to the library when they could just stay cozy in their bed?

Contrarily, it may ignite some warm feelings in the hearts of the excitable, like yours truly. The colder the weather this time of year, the louder the Christmas bells ringing in my ears become. No matter who you are, everyone loves to curl up under the covers and dream sweet dreams of sugar plums!

Other excitements this kind of freezing weather brings include the whisperings of snow. The weather reports say that there is a microscopic chance of snow and it almost becomes a frenzy of “IT IS SNOWING TONIGHT!”

Whether you love the cold or hate it, the good news is, it probably isn’t here to stay, at least for now. The notoriously unpredictable Carolina weather leaves us constantly questioning attire and checking weather reports. However for now, as unpleasant as it is, it brings us closer to Christmas! (And deeper into the covers of our beds).
