Is Dating Dated?

Between iMessage and online relationships, formal dating may be a thing of the past. College is supposed to be a plethora of new beginnings, new experiences, and most importantly new relationships.

In high school, you spend your time with the same people seven hours every day for four years. Instead of foreign conversation and backgrounds, in high school you just take your friendships to the next level. Romanticizing the future, we all looked forward to our college years as an opportunity to grab lunch downtown, morning coffee dates at The Drip and dinner at the Pearlz Oyster Bar in the Vista. Unfortunately, just over two months in college, I’ve made friends, I’ve flirted, etc… but none of my relationships have grown past texting. I understand a lot of this has to do with my desirability; maybe I just haven’t met the right person (I like to tell myself).

But then… thinking a little bit more, is dating just outdated? For our generation, anyway? With a boyfriend, dinner and movie was casual, nothing special. Now, it’s sad because it’s almost assumed at this point that with a few text messages, winking emojis, and drinks in Five Points, women react to a man’s satisfaction without them having to throw down the extra $50.00 toward a real outing, a real wine and dine. It’s pathetic, it’s embarrassing. I feel like I am missing out or doing something wrong. Maybe I’m not putting my self out there in the right way, who knows? But outside of doors being held open, chivalry seems to be slowly dying. So c’mon guys, you’re supposed to be Southern gentlemen… step it up!
