I Don't Have a Life...I Have Midterms

It’s that time of year again. The time when you have tests to study for, papers due and projects to finish. But, have you ever noticed they’re all due in the same week…or maybe the same day?

It’s time, once again, to practically marry your computer and put flippers on your eyes since they are swimming. Those three papers, projects and tests won’t get done by themselves, after all.

Oh wait! It’s noon and you haven’t eaten yet since you’re so studiously working on everything. But, who has time to go to Russell House, wait in line for 10 minutes and sit down and eat? I know I don’t. That’s when it’s time to call on a student’s superhero….Ramen Man! Ugh! I know. A whole week of ramen or TV dinners just to get that stuff done.

But, look at it this way. Several years ago, programs like Microsoft Word weren’t able to do the things they can do now. Even worse, you could be using a typewriter. Spell Check? What’s that? It didn’t exist back then.

So, while you’re sitting there griping and saying “I can’t wait for this paper to be done”, you can also thank Microsoft for Spell Check. After all, they human eye isn’t perfect. Just look at any book that wasn’t proofread well…and, yes, they are out there.

And, let’s not forget those friends that are saying, “I thought we were supposed to hang out this weekend?” Sure, you want to spend time with your friends. But, let’s face it. You have bigger fish to fry. And, if certain people don’t understand that, maybe they don’t have your best interest in mind.
After all, you have a goal…and, I don’t mean going to every football game before you graduate. You chose USC and your major for good reasons. Those that love to write will become well respected journalists. On the other hand, those that love to crunch numbers will become well respected accountants.

But, none of that will happen unless you stick with it. Sure, writing that 10-page paper is a pain in the neck. But, what you learn while doing it will be priceless. But, the bigger gift will be the fact that you will be able to use all that knowledge once you get that dream job.

Keep pushing and moving forward. You’re on your way.
