New York Fashion Week, Spring 2014: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Tweets are clogging your timeline, models dominate the trending photos on Instagram and if you see one more post about Oscar de la Renta on Facebook, you may as well detach yourself from social media altogether.

Fashion is evolutionary, not revolutionary. The only thing constant about it is change. And just weeks ago in New York City, designers introduced avant-garde elements ranging from blocking to pastel colors to daring prints and patterns to the most unconventional presentation you’ve ever seen. So here it is: the good, the bad, and the ugly of New York Fashion Week 2014.

The Good: Christian Siriano

The Bad: Jason Wu

The Ugly: Thom Browne

And then there’s Thom Browne, who was purposefully saved for last to talk about. In the past, his models have notoriously strutted down the catwalk in a crazy mix-up of prints and patterns. Eccentric choices and diverse designs usually leads him into the public eye, as far as high fashion is concerned anyway, but the most eye-popping, jaw-dropping work of the year most certainly came from his collection that featured what looked like a cross between “American Horror Story” and “The Walking Dead.” Unconventional as ever, their teased-out buns, smudged red lipstick and palest of faces was a hint at the designer’s portrayal that dramatics have a place in everyday life. Browne is the epitome of fashion extremes, but in this case, I’d hold “fashion extreme” a severe understatement.
