Is Pastel the New Punk?

Bright colors and shimmer dominate New York Fashion Week

It’s been a long time coming. Black has followed and plagued me. It’s stalked me like I’m Wednesday Adams… all for one reason: punk was in. When I say “in,” I mean for a long time. Technically, punk never left; regardless if it’s a trend in fashion, it has always been (and will always be) a lifestyle.

Punk is a statement, a way of life and a movement; it’s been interpreted, maybe even misinterpreted, on the runway over and over. I love black and leather; I love pieces that draw on the darker realms for inspiration. Regardless of punk being “in,” I will continue to wear—and love— black. The runways have embraced something totally new for spring…and I love it.

I’m a creature of comfort; I’ve defined my style enough to be able to slide past some trends and embrace others. Spring 2014, however, is something pretty different than what I usually wear, but it’s something I can’t wait to adopt.

Pearly pastels, structured jackets and skirts, holographic madness, flat form sandals, statement cutouts and mesh and sheer paneling all define this season. It seems as if the industry is having a sort of breakthrough and turning back toward the light. After endless seasons of punk-inspired street wear, it’s refreshing and modern to see something with a little more substance and structure.

IBC, Phillip Lim, Marc by Marc Jacobs, BCBGeneration and countless others are embracing the notion that turning away from the edgy and dark feel of punk can be done—and done well. These houses seem to be influenced by what was once “lower” fashion. Sites like Nasty Gal and brands like UNIF have been flaunting flat forms, holographic print and white-on-white minimalism for some time now.

Just like Slimane of Saint Laurent did a street style inspired collection last season, these houses are doing the same, just taking it to the next level.

Regardless of what your take on this trickle up effect is, there’s one thing for certain: this spring is bound to be hot.
